It has been recently noted that a good career path might be that of an architect. Indeed, as construction and building are on the rise going in 2013 more and more people are considering having their dream home built, and some businesses are expanding their operations and in need of new facilities. Someone has to design these buildings, and make sure they are architecturally sound. It will take someone with experience, know-how, and licensed credentials. Now might be a good time to be an architect in other words. Okay so let’s talk about this for second shall we?

What type of jobs and careers are there out there in the architectural field?

The Wall Street Journal on December 21, 2012 had an article “Scaling Down Expectations – A master of miniature homes brings architects’ visions to life; hand-painting the hydrangeas,” by Sanette Tanaka which told of the high price tags of architectural modeling, something that every developer knows is essential to passing a planning commission meeting with flying colors without being lambasted by evil commenters, bad-attitude commissioners, or environmental activists.

A dream home mini-mansion model might cost anywhere from $5,000 to 15,000 just for the HO or 1:100 scale model. You might not think that model building and architectural rendering belongs in the category of an architectural career path, but I assure you it does. Everything must be built to scale, and it is exactly what the customer, the community, and the local authorities need to help them visualize the project. A good solid model can make or break the decision to build or not to build. Nothing happens until that point, until the decision is made and the customer OK’s the funding under the nod and go ahead of the local planning commission authority.

Some might say this is kids play, but let me tell you when I was a kid building Legos, HO scale train models, I don’t remember ever receiving $5-$10,000 for building a diorama with structures on it. Imagine being a grown up and getting paid that sort of money to build models, that’s what I call never growing up, and never working again your life in your architectural career.

In the future, I suppose there will be 3-D printing of such models, and it will just be a matter of painting, and colorizing the landscape. Still, if the going price is $5000-$10,000 one might be able to make that sort of money over just a couple days period. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
