Some Considerations Before Getting Into Rabbit Farming

One industry that has seen a recent rise in popularity is rabbit farming. It is a great industry for people who want to farm something, but don’t have a lot of space or time to put into raising larger livestock. But before you go out and start buying rabbits, ask yourself these questions so you know you are ready and able to start a rabbit farm.

Is it legal to raise rabbits where I live? If it is not, you will not be able to begin rabbit farming right now. Most cities do not define rabbits as farm animals and do not have limits to the number that you can have, but some do, so you will need to look into that before you get started. Depending on what you plan on selling your rabbits for will also determine if you have the right space requirements.

Will I be able to sell rabbit products? There are many products that come from rabbits, mainly meat and fur. And live rabbits can be sold as pets, show animals, breeding stock, and even laboratory animals. Be sure that there is a market for what you plan on selling. This is especially important if you live in a city, where there may not be as many opportunities to market your rabbit products.

Do I understand the needs of rabbits? Rabbits require more than just water and pellets and are very sensitive to the temperature, so it’s important to understand how to care for your rabbits so that you can get the most out of them. A properly-cared for doe can easily produce 50 kits in one year, but an improperly cared for one may not be able to produce any.

Do I understand rabbit breeds and breeding techniques? Having an understanding of what type of breeds are used for which market will help you greatly in turning a profit. You will also need to have a well-thought-out breeding plan in place that will optimize the normal breeding cycles of rabbits while allowing them time to rest between litters. If you don’t understand these, be sure to research them well first.

While the internet can be a great source to help you understand the ins and outs of rabbit farms, the best way to really know if this is right for you is to visit a few rabbit farms near you. This will give you the opportunity to see what rabbit farming will look like on a daily basis, and these rabbit farmers will be able to give you insider information on markets, breeds, and breeding programs.
